Oscar Watch: 'The Duchess' Costume Party
Kris Tapley complete at InContention points us toward an interesting section at the official website for the overriding Vantage holiday release The Duchess. The site is pubbing the costumes for the belated 18th century period piece based on Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, played by Keira Knightley. The move appears to be an obvious early ploy at vying for the better Costume Oscar nomination, but it doesn't end there as the "Discover" section refers to Georgiana as "The Empress of Fashion"

‘Duchess’ website has an eye toward the threads
‘’ [ paramount ]Vantage has always been a dependable haven for the crafts cateogries when it comes to the Oscar season.  Each year, the Vantage Guilds website showcases the below-the-line stuff that consistently gets the flimsy end of the coverage stick.  (We harp on this a lot around these parts). With that in mind, the studio has launched an official website for Saul Dibb’s approaching film “The Duchess.”  And as a part of the interactivity, there is a extra section spotlighting Michael O’Connor’s co

Keira Knightley poses as the cover girl of Vogue’s September 2008 fall fashion issue.     The headline reads, “[Keira is a] fashion ahead, pirate queen, [and] history’s sexiest Duchess.” Her newfangled film “The Duchess” actually opens in the UK on September 5 and is alone a circumscribed release in the combined States on September 19.  (What about Canada,[ i ]don’t know). The 23-year previous actress is somewhat experiencing five hundredéjà vu, after being on the June 2007 cover of Vogue. That issue however was the se

A duke is a noble person, historically of highest rank below the King or Queen, and usually controls a duchy or a Dukedom. The title comes from the Latin dux, which had the sense of "military commander" and was employed both by the Germanic peoples themselves and by the Roman authors covering them to refer to their war leaders.

In the Middle Ages the title signified first among the Germanic monarchies. Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king. There were, however, variants of these meanings and there were even sovereign princes employing ducal titles.

In the Modern Age it has become a nominal rank without an actual principality. It is still the highest titular peerage in France, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy.

A woman who holds in her own right the title to such duchy or dukedom, or is the wife of a duke, is normally styled duchess. However, Queen Elizabeth II is known as Duke of Normandy in the Channel Islands and Duke of Lancaster in Lancashire.
